The West Seneca Citizens' Fire Academy was established to answer questions like these and more. The academy is one night a week for seven weeks, and you will learn how your firefighters do their jobs. For the first time, citizens will be able to gain classroom and hands-on experience to help them understand what being a firefighter is all about.
The West Seneca Citizens' Fire Academy will include hands-on experience with: fire hoses, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), Emergency medical services (EMS), and fire extinguishers. The Academy also has tours of fire apparatus and an ambulance. Each participant will receive a personalized notebook for class notes and a certificate.
What topics are covered? Eligible participants will receive training in the following:
- History & Organization of the fire service
- Emergency Medical Services
- Fire behavior
- Fire Extinguishers
- Hoses, ladders, firefighting tools and protective equipment
- Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
- Search & Rescue
- Disaster preparedness
- Special Teams
- Incident Command
When does the Academy start? The next Academy will begin in September 2008 and run for seven weeks. Each instruction is three hours long and begins at 6:30pm. Classes begin at the Vigilant Fire Hall.
